B A PROGRAMME IN MASS COMMUNICATION & MEDIA STUDIES (3+1 YEARS DEGREE)

Education: Who Is in Charge — Students, Parents, or Institutions?

Before we enter that debate, we must return to first principles. Education is rooted in millennia of human civilization, and understanding its history helps us decide what education must be today — and why it matters in every life.

What is education, and why is it necessary?

Education is the disciplined acquisition of knowledge, skills, and tools that enable individuals to think critically, act with purpose, and earn a dignified living. At IMCFTS, affiliated with the University of Kalyani and recognized by the University Grants Commission, we treat education as both an intellectual and practical enterprise: it prepares students for meaningful careers and for thoughtful participation in society.

Why choose IMCFTS?

For more than twenty years we have translated answers into action. Our graduates and postgraduates consistently find their place in the professional world — reflected in a 98% placement record — because we combine rigorous academic training with industry-relevant skills and mentorship. The knowledge you gain here is designed to answer the hard questions interviewers ask and to equip you for the competitive, fast-changing world beyond campus.

A brief invitation to learn more

If you have fifteen minutes, this short overview will provide useful historical context and introduce you to our approach to education and policy. If you have more time, you’ll discover deeper insights and begin a journey toward expertise in media and communication.

What IMCFTS stands for - Our name reflects our mission:

TO SPREAD AWARENESS
TO THINK BEYOND CASTE, CREED, AND INEQUALITY
TO STRENGTHEN BODY AND MIND
TO PURSUE WISDOM
TO UNDERSTAND HUMANITY
AND TO PROPAGATE KNOWLEDGE THROUGH MEDIA.

These principles guide our curriculum, our campus life, and our commitment to producing thoughtful, responsible media professionals.
At IMCFTS we don’t just answer the question “What is education?” — we demonstrate how education can transform lives, communities, and the media landscape. Join us in shaping a better, fairer, and more compassionate society.

Continuing the Legacy of Gurukul: Bridging Timeless Wisdom with Digital Knowledge

IMCFTS draws inspiration from India’s Gurukul tradition — an educational philosophy rooted in holistic learning, human values, creativity, and close engagement with nature. This philosophy found one of its most powerful modern expressions in Visva-Bharati, envisioned by Rabindranath Tagore as a space where knowledge, culture, and life existed in harmony.

The creation of Visva-Bharati was itself an act of dedication and sacrifice. Mrinalini Devi contributed her personal ornaments, and Rabindranath Tagore sold his bungalow and devoted his Nobel Prize earnings (1913) to build this institution. In 1921, Visva-Bharati formally took shape and soon became a magnet for some of the most creative minds of the country. After Independence, it received university status in 1951 and evolved into one of India’s most respected centres of higher learning, with Tagore’s eldest son serving as its first Vice-Chancellor.

Learning in Harmony with Nature

Visva-Bharati continues to embody the simplicity and depth of Tagore’s educational philosophy. Open-air classrooms beneath mango and Chhatim trees reflect his belief that education should unfold within natural surroundings. Chhatimtala — where Maharshi Debendranath Tagore meditated and where Tagore later conducted classes — remains a symbol of reflection, creativity, and intellectual freedom.

The campus preserves its rural charm through mud structures, thatched architecture, and an environment that nurtures artistic expression. Tagore introduced a curriculum that blended arts, culture, human values, and experiential learning, including nature walks and community engagement. Beginning with just five students and five teachers, the institution grew with a strong commitment to social responsibility, including meaningful engagement with the Santhal community — an effort that helped Santiniketan become one of the most significant centres of education for Santhals in West Bengal

Historical Foundations

The roots of Visva-Bharati trace back to 1863 when Maharshi Debendranath Tagore established an ashram on land gifted by Babu Sitikanta Sinha of Raipur. Initially known as Brahmacharya Ashram and later Brahmacharya Vidyalaya, it encouraged spiritual reflection and inclusive learning. In 1901, Rabindranath Tagore founded a co-educational school within this environment, laying the foundation for a revolutionary educational model.

A Legacy That Inspires IMCFTS

Visva-Bharati stands as a timeless symbol of learning that nurtures creativity, imagination, ethical awareness, and global understanding. Its open-air classrooms and interdisciplinary approach continue to inspire institutions committed to meaningful education.

At IMCFTS, this legacy informs our mission: to connect the philosophical depth of Gurukul learning with contemporary digital knowledge and media practice. We strive to create an academic environment where technology meets human values, creativity meets responsibility, and education prepares students not only for careers but for thoughtful participation in society.

Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) for Students

IMCFTS is proud to introduce Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) to support students in improving focus, motivation, and concentration through professional therapeutic counselling — for the first time.

Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) is a directive, person-centered therapeutic approach designed to strengthen an individual’s motivation for positive change. It helps students develop clarity, overcome internal barriers, and build confidence in their academic and personal journeys.

Understanding Therapeutic Approaches

There are more than fifty therapeutic approaches used in counselling and mental health practice. However, only a few are widely applied in student support settings. These approaches remain effective across different situations and are often combined depending on individual needs.

Modern counselling recognises that every student is unique. Therefore, therapists frequently integrate multiple techniques to create a personalised and holistic counselling experience.

Note:Most therapists blend different therapeutic approaches and tailor an integrated counselling plan for each individual to ensure meaningful and lasting outcomes.
